Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010)
Zeus' lightning bolt gets stolen, and he blames it on Poseidon's son, Percy Jackson. But, at the time of this incident, Percy doesn't even know that he is the son of Poseidon. Zeus still thinks that Percy stole it, so he gives a certain amount of time for Percy to return the lightning bolt before he decides to initiate a war against his brother. One day, while Percy is visiting the Museum of Metropolitan of Art, he is attacked by a Fury. Grover, Percy's best friend, ends up saving his life and explaining to him that he is a demigod. Grover takes him to a special place where people like Percy are hidden from the rest of the world. Percy's mother had tagged along for this, but was taken by a monster and is now stuck in hell with Hades. At the camp, Percy learns about the lightning bolt, trains a bit, and meets Annabeth. Together, Percy, Grover, and Annabeth decide to visit Hades in order to get his mother back, as well as to try to figure out who the lightning thief really was. Perhaps it's just because I don't like, nor understand, Greek mythology, but I didn't really find this movie to be that entertaining. The entire movie just seemed a bit rushed, and the acting wasn't great. I've also read other reviews that people have written, and it seems that the book doesn't really follow the movie that well. I wouldn't know this since I haven't read the book, but oh well. I still didn't really enjoy the movie that much.
I gave this movie 3/10 stars on imdb.com.

Margot at the Wedding movie review
July 22, 2010 - #44/100
Margot at the Wedding (2007)
From the same director (Noah Baumbach) of The Squid and the Whale, comes Margot at the Wedding. As it says on imdb.com, this movie is "a slice of family life: sisters, husbands, children, history, secrets, and jealousies." Margot (Nicole Kidman) travels from Manhattan to her family's Long Island home with her son Claude. It had been a while since she Margot had visited her sister Pauline because they always seemed to not get along well in the past, but Pauline is getting married and Margot didn't want to miss it. Malcolm (Jack Black) is the lazy slacker that Pauline is marrying, and it's obvious to tell that Margot doesn't care much for Malcolm at all. She thinks that Pauline could do a lot better than him. Issues from the past, as well as the present, arise. Margot and Pauline seem to be bickering back and forth a lot, and Margot even becomes upset with Claude, at times. But, Margot has issues of her own. While dealing with marital problems, she also has a lover nearby. Therefore, there are plenty of issues that the family encounters in this movie. It seems that Noah Baumbach does an amazing job at portraying family issues, but I felt that The Squid and the Whale was better than this movie. At times, I got a little bit bored. It didn't really keep my attention like I thought it would. The acting was wonderful, but I just think that I expected a bit more out of the movie since Nicole Kidman and Jack Black both starred in it. And, perhaps I shouldn't have assumed something like that, but I did.
I gave this movie 5/10 stars on imdb.com.

Kate & Leopold movie review
July 21, 2010 - #43/100
Kate & Leopold (2001)
Stuart Besser (Liev Schreiber) finds a space near the Brooklyn Bridge where there is a gap in time. Therefore, he goes back to the 19th century in order to try to better understand the past. When he travels back in time, he takes a small camera with him. While taking various pictures, a man who actually lives in the 1870s time period by the name of Leopold (Hugh Jackman) notices Stuart, and becomes curious. Once Stuart realizes that Leopold has noticed something odd about him, he quickly heads back to the time warp area in order to go back to the 21st century. But, there is a problem. Leopold follows him, and now ends up in an entirely different century. There is no way to fix this problem immediately because the time warp area only exists at certain times. Therefore, Leopold is stuck in the 21st century until the time warp opens up again. Stuart's ex-girlfriend Kate McKay (Meg Ryan) lives in the same apartment complex as him. Therefore, she eventually meets Leopold. Of course, they eventually like each other. So, towards the end of the movie, it's time for Kate to figure out if she should stay in the 21st century, or if she should go back to the 19th century so she can be with Leopold. I'm a huge fan of Meg Ryan, so that's mainly why I wanted to watch this movie. But, Hugh Jackman does a wonderful job. He makes his character seem awkward, yet amusing, when being exposed to the various differences between the 19th and 21st centuries. True, most of the movie was extremely predictable, but most romantic comedies are predictable. Also, at times, parts of the movie seemed to be a bit cheesy. But, it managed to keep my attention and I thought that it was cute. I wouldn't mind watching it again.
I gave this movie 7/10 stars on imdb.com.

The Squid and the Whale movie review
July 20, 2010 - #42/100
The Squid and the Whale (2005)
This movie is set in 1986, and it is based on true childhood experiences of Noah Baumbach (the writer and director) and his brother. Joan (Laura Linney) and Bernard (Jeff Daniels) Berkman are going through a divorce, and it's easy to tell that the divorce greatly affects their children Frank and Walt. Joan, who is growing as a writer, admits being unfaithful to Bernard. On the other hand, it's easy to tell that Bernard is a selfish man who is upset at the fact that he hasn't been able to write a decent book for many years. Right after the separation occurs, each child chooses a side. Walt wants to spend most of his time with Bernard, while Frank would rather spend most of his time with Joan. There are so many aspects of this movie that make you feel uncomfortable and sad. Divorce is an ugly mess, but I just hope that it's not always as bad as it seems in this movie. The acting in this movie was perfect. I was actually shocked to find out that Jeff Daniels was the dad. Most of the time, when I think of Jeff, I think of Dumb and Dumber. Therefore, it was nice to see him play a serious role. His character is completely unlikeable, but yet he still manages to make you feel sorry for him. I think it's safe to say that I've never seen a movie like this before. It's definitely different, but sometimes it's nice to see movies that aren't predictable. Noah Baumbach did a wonderful job at bringing this story to life, and I sincerely hope that some of the things in the movie were exaggerated because it would be terrible to grow up in a home that handles divorce in this manner. This movie was brilliant, but awkward.
I gave this movie 8/10 stars on imdb.com.

Run, Fat Boy, Run movie review
July 19, 2010 - #41/100
Run, Fat Boy, Run (2008)
Dennis Doyle (Simon Pegg) is well known for never being able to finish anything that he has ever started. In the beginning of the movie, it is his wedding day. His fiance Elizabeth 'Libby' Odell (Thandie Newton) is pregnant. It's obvious to tell that Dennis is extremely nervous about the huge commitment of becoming married and being a father all at once. Therefore, he runs. Fast forward to five years later, and Dennis is a single, slightly overweight man. Every time Libby brings their child over so he can spend some time with his father, Dennis tries to convince her to take him back. He's realized that he has made a mistake, but he's too late. Libby is dating a man named Whit, who is an active runner in many various marathons. Therefore, Dennis decides to prove everyone wrong by deciding to run a marathon in hopes of finally being able to finish something for the first time in his life. Just a few days before the race, Whit proposes to Libby, and she accepts. With a little help from his friends, Dennis is encouraged to still participate in the race in hopes of winning his family back. Personally, before viewing this movie, I had anticipated it being a lot more funny and entertaining. But, it didn't really make me laugh that much. I mean, it was good, but it wasn't as good as I had expected. Overall, this is just a predictable comedy.
I gave this movie 6/10 stars on imdb.com.

Last Chance Harvey movie review
July 15, 2010 - #40/100
Last Chance Harvey (2008)
Harvey Shine (Dustin Hoffman) writes music for television ads in New York. One weekend, he heads to London for his daughter's wedding. It's obvious to tell that, since the divorce, he hasn't been in his daughter's life that much. Perhaps this is why his daughter seems to be closer to her step-dad than she does to her real dad. While in London, Harvey learns that his boss has pushed him aside for a younger talent. Needless to say, his life isn't exactly perfect at the moment. So, he decides to stay in London for a bit since his job doesn't seem to be working out. In comes Kate Walker (Emma Thompson), who works doing surveys of passengers passing through the airport. Harvey had first met her when he had gotten off of the plane, but he didn't actually start talking to her until he's sitting in the bar. At first, Kate doesn't seem interested, but she finally ends up giving him a chance. Over the next few days, the continue to hang out, getting to know each other better. But, will this random fling actually turn into something more? I mostly wanted to watch this movie because Emma Thompson is one of my favorite actresses. Throughout the entire movie, there are never really any parts that tend to be monumental. Therefore, nothing in particular really sticks out. But, the movie still managed to keep my attention. I can definitely think of better movies that have Emma in them, like Stranger Than Fiction, but this was still a good movie. I wouldn't mind watching it again.

Martian Child movie review
July 13, 2010 - #39/100
Martian Child (2007)
Growing up, David (John Cusack) was always seen as the weird kid in school. Many years later, he becomes a science fiction writer. When the movie first starts off, it lets the viewer know that David has been a widower for two years now. It also becomes apparent that David is thinking about adopting a child. David's sister Liz (John Cusack) tries to talk David out of the idea, thinking that it's not the best idea for him to adopt at the moment. But, upon meeting a little boy named Dennis, who thinks that he is on a mission from Mars, David instantly connects with him. Dennis is definitely a quirky child. He stays in a large box for most of the day because he fears sunlight, and he wears a belt of batteries so he won't float away. While David is taking Dennis home on a trial, his sister and his best friend offer support. But, problems arise when Dennis is expelled from school. The court isn't exactly sure if they want to approve the adoption. So, David then has to figure out how to be a father and turn Dennis into a normal child in order for the court to grant custody. Overall, I thought that this was a cute movie. I mostly wanted to watch it because I love John and Joan Cusack. I think that they are wonderful together. Also, the young child who played Dennis did a pretty good job. It wasn't the greatest movie, but I definitely wouldn't mind watching it again.

Whip It movie review
July 11, 2010 - #38/100
Whip It (2009)
Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) lives in a small town called Bodeen, which is located in Texas. From the very beginning of the movie, it's easy to tell that the town is a bit old fashioned. Her mother is obsessed with putting Bliss and her younger sister into beauty pageants. But, Bliss doesn't care anything about the pageants. She only participates in them to keep her mother satisfied. But, one day when Bliss is in a store buying a pair of shoes, she notices a flyer for roller derby. Bliss convinces her friend Pash to go along with her. After viewing the game, Bliss decides to try out for a team, and ends up making the Hurl Scouts team. She has finally found something that she is truly passionate about. The only problem is, a person has to at least be 21 years old in order to be on a roller derby team. Therefore, Bliss lies about her age, as well as telling her parents that she will be taking an SAT Prep course at school while she will actually be heading to Austin for roller derby practice. So, it's easy to tell that there are a few problems that eventually arise in the movie. Especially when the final roller derby tournament game is scheduled the same night as a pageant. This movie was the directorial debut of Drew Barrymore, and I thought that she did a wonderful job. I'd love for her to direct more, if the opportunity ever arose. I admit that I was a bit skeptical about watching this movie to begin with, but I loved it. The cast was wonderful, as well as the acting.
I gave this movie 9/10 stars on imdb.com.

All About Steve movie review
July 11, 2010 - #37/100
All About Steve (2009)
Mary Horowitz (Sandra Bullock) writes crossword puzzles for a newspaper called the Sacramento Herald. From the beginning of the movie, it's obvious to tell that Mary isn't necessarily average. Her parents are always trying to set her up on blind dates, seeing as how she is single. Therefore, Mary regretfully agrees to go on a blind date with this guy named Steve (Bradley Cooper), who is a cameraman for CNN. Upon meeting him, she is instantly attracted. Within minutes, it seems as if she has decided that Steve is the man for her. Their date doesn't even last ten minutes because it's obvious that Steve is turned off by her quirky personality, but he makes a remark out of kindness about how he wished that she could go on the road with him. Mary ends up losing her job because she creates a crossword puzzle which is all about Steve. Therefore, she decides to follow him across the country. The thing that bothered me the most about this movie is her dedication to follow him across the country just because of one remark. She had only met him once, and for only about ten minutes. Therefore, she just seemed kind of creepy and stalker-ish. That being said, Sandra managed to play the part perfectly. I honestly didn't expect much out of this movie, and I was right to think that.
I gave this movie 4/10 stars on imdb.com.

Bend It Like Beckham movie review
July 8, 2010 - #36/100
Bend It Like Beckham (2002)
Jess Bhamra comes from a traditional, close-knit Sikh family. Her parents want Jess and her older sister to stay true to the traditional values of their ancestors. But, Jess has a secret passion. She is obsessed with soccer, and David Beckham. Unbeknownst to her parents, Jess plays soccer with some of her guy friends at a park just for fun. One day, Juliette Paxton (Keira Knightley) notices Jess, and decides to see whether or not she would be interested in playing on an all-girls soccer team. To begin with, Jess isn't necessarily comfortable having to sneak out on a regular basis for practices and games, but she does it anyway because soccer is her passion. Eventually, both Jess and Juliette fall for their soccer coach Joe (Jonathan Rhys Myers). Of course, this jeopardizes their friendship. But, towards the end of the movie, Jess' sister is getting married the same day as the final soccer tournament game. This game happens to be a very important game because a U.S. College scout will be present to assess her performance. Therefore, Jess must decide whether she will support her family's traditional ways, or play in the soccer tournament. Overall, it was a cute movie. It kind of reminded me of She's The Man, but with less funny moments. And, of course, the plot is predictable. If you are looking for something deep and meaningful, then this wouldn't necessarily be that great of a choice. This is just something to watch whenever you are bored and you want to watch a lighthearted movie.
I gave this movie 6/10 stars on imdb.com.

Eclipse movie review
July 6, 2010 - #35/100
Eclipse (2010)
Isabella Swan (Kristen Stewart), Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson), and Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner) are all back again. This time, the vampire Victoria, who wants to kill Bella, forms a newborn vampire army in attempt to finish off Bella. While Bella is oblivious to this newborn vampire army, she is trying to choose between her love for the vampire Edward, or her close friendship with the werewolf Jacob. Near the end of the movie, it's time for the vampires and the werewolves to join together in order to destroy the newborn vampire army before it attempts to destroy Bella and the rest of the normal people who live in Forks. If you aren't a fan of Twilight, then this definitely isn't a film that you need to see. Generally, I enjoy Twilight, but I am by no means obsessed with it. I can think of plenty of other books / movies that are better than Twilight. With that being said, Kristen Stewart is still a horrible actress. She lacks emotion. I find it almost unbearable, at times, to watch the screen when she's attempting to act. Other than that, this movie is more dark than the previous movies. Also, the battle scene near the end was pretty good. Overall, I enjoyed it. It managed to keep me entertained for around two hours, and it closely followed the book.
I gave this movie 7/10 stars on imdb.com.

I gave this movie 7/10 stars on imdb.com.
Addicted to Love movie review

Addicted to Love (1997)
An astronomer named Sam (Matthew Broderick) is in love with Linda. In the beginning of the movie, Linda goes to New York for a bit, and she ends up leaving Sam for a Frenchman named Anton. Sam decides to go to New York in order to attempt to win Linda back. He sets up home in an abandoned building opposite his ex-girlfriend's apartment. Several weeks after he has set everything up, a very hostile woman named Maggie (Meg Ryan) arrives. Maggie is Anton's ex-fiance, and she's out for revenge. Together, they team up to attempt to separate the couple, and ruin Anton's life. I mostly wanted to see this movie because of Meg Ryan. Personally, I wasn't entirely impressed with this movie. The acting was good, but there was one main thing that bothered me a lot. The thing that bothered me the most is that Sam took up an abandoned building as his temporary home for a few months. That just seemed odd, and slightly stalker-ish. He would watch her every move. It just seemed creepy. Other than that, I didn't think that it was a bad movie, but it wasn't as good as what I was expecting it to be.
I gave this movie 6/10 stars on imdb.com.
