Bend It Like Beckham (2002)
Jess Bhamra comes from a traditional, close-knit Sikh family. Her parents want Jess and her older sister to stay true to the traditional values of their ancestors. But, Jess has a secret passion. She is obsessed with soccer, and David Beckham. Unbeknownst to her parents, Jess plays soccer with some of her guy friends at a park just for fun. One day, Juliette Paxton (Keira Knightley) notices Jess, and decides to see whether or not she would be interested in playing on an all-girls soccer team. To begin with, Jess isn't necessarily comfortable having to sneak out on a regular basis for practices and games, but she does it anyway because soccer is her passion. Eventually, both Jess and Juliette fall for their soccer coach Joe (Jonathan Rhys Myers). Of course, this jeopardizes their friendship. But, towards the end of the movie, Jess' sister is getting married the same day as the final soccer tournament game. This game happens to be a very important game because a U.S. College scout will be present to assess her performance. Therefore, Jess must decide whether she will support her family's traditional ways, or play in the soccer tournament. Overall, it was a cute movie. It kind of reminded me of She's The Man, but with less funny moments. And, of course, the plot is predictable. If you are looking for something deep and meaningful, then this wouldn't necessarily be that great of a choice. This is just something to watch whenever you are bored and you want to watch a lighthearted movie.
I gave this movie 6/10 stars on imdb.com.
